Ibiza Meeting
Sustainable Islands Summit. Agenda. April 25/26
Island Sustainability.
Islands are surprisingly short on sustainability. But there is little progress. Is the challenge policy or technology? This session will attempt to provide a broad overview of the unique challenges faced by islands and potential solutions. Most islands are blessed with significant sunshine and wind which in theory should make them good candidates for sustainability. The Clean Energy Island EU secretariat was formed to address the issue and will serve as a key resource.
Resources: Lucija Rakocevic. Regulatory Lead, Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat and Dr. Inmaculada (Inma) Saranova, Executive Director Ibiza Preservation. (invited)

Infrastructure Finance.
What role can innovations such as tokenization play to fund? The cost for the expected increase in demand for energy is measured in the trillions. As the Grid has reached its limits and as new projects such as solar farms come on stream there will be a demand to finance solar and wind projects as well as the transmission and storage of those energies. All require significant investment. What role can new financial models such as tokenization and block chain play in such? Experts in these areas will describe their potential.

The Future of the Grid.
With demand far exceeding supply what are potential solutions? The aging Grid is a general challenge. The need to find ways to transfer power more efficiently and to put energy sources much closer to energy use. Distributed power models and the development of new technologies such as the use of AI to better manage grid load are all critical. This session will provide an overview of the problem with a particular focus on the challenges faced by islands generally and by Ibiza specifically.

Water.
Global water supplies are threatened. The global water shortage is broadly recognized. Increasingly business establishments such as hotels work to reduce their consumption. Public awareness campaigns are common but the success of such has been limited. Conservation of water, purification of water, and the creation of water such as from humidity in the air and even cloud seeding to induce rain are all in development. The session will explore some of these approaches and assess those with the greatest promise.

Resources: Hashem Azouli. Founder and CEO Ahbstra.

Solar Power.
The sun is the ultimate source of power, but there are limitations such as available space and cost. Governments worldwide have created incentives such as the ability to sell power back to the grid and to capture power during the day. To address space issues, strategies such as canopies for parking lots and agriculture, rooftops installations and even floating PV panels on water are all in development. This session will provide an overview of the role solar plays in island environments, the level of adoption and the latest advances.

Resources: Robert Sjöström – Chairman, Midsummer.

Waste.
Like islands everywhere, Ibiza has waste challenges. In 2020, Ibiza inaugurated a modern waste treatment facility at Ca Na Putxa, to process up to 185,000 tons of waste annually. Mechanical sorting to recover recyclable materials and utilize organic waste to produce biogas, generating approximately 2 MW of electricity. Nevertheless, the Ca Na Putxa landfill is nearing its capacity, prompting authorities to explore alternatives such as constructing an incineration plant or exporting waste to other islands. What options exist?
